Why do you need fit testing?
WHS regulation dictates that Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) must be both suitable and adequate. Fit Testing of respirators is mandated by Australian Standard AS/NZ1715 for all close-fitting respirators to fulfil this WHS requirement.
What is Face Mask Fit Testing?
Face fit testing is a process to check that the worker can don or put on a respirator, and to ensure it seals adequately on their face.
Is Fit Testing required for disposable masks?
Yes, while disposable masks are generally not recommended for hazardous substances, vapours, and/or particulate, they are widely used for health workers moving in and out of patient areas as a precaution. This was particularly evident during the Covid period, and that protocol has continued for first line responders to minimise their risk to the myriad of infections and diseases they deal with when treating the ill.
What are we trying to prevent?
Inhalation of any hazardous substance, chemical, vapour, liquid contaminant, or dangerous particulate matter relevant to the task, and the respirators filter capability and performance factors.
How often is Fit Testing Required?
- Every 12 months – a new fit test is required to ensure the integrity of your mask, and that you are maintaining good respirator practice.
- Fit Testing is also required every time you change the make, model or size of your mask.
- A new fit test is required if your head/face features change – usually from an accident, significant loss/gain of weight, or from a dental/surgical procedure.
What is involved with a Fit Test?
Quantitative fit testing (QNFT) measures the effectiveness of a respirator’s seal against the wearer’s face using specialized equipment to produce a numerical “fit factor”. This method provides an objective and accurate assessment of fit. QNFT is suitable for various close-fit respirator types, including half-face and full-face masks. INSERT PHOTO
Do I need to bring my Half Face or Full Face with me?
Yes. We also need to know before you come what respirator including the make and model of the respirator (i.e. 3M 6225 Kit, 3M 9322A+ or Sundstrom SR100). Unfortunately we can’t tell you exactly what respirator to use in your workplace as this is based off of AS/NZS 1715:2009 and your specific workplace requirements.
We can provide suggestions and provide cost effective respirators if required (3M and Sundstrom) – we do carry limited stock.
How long does Face Fit Testing take?
Quantitative face fit testing takes approximately 15 minutes if a pass is achieved plus some time for basic training.
Is there any training involved?
When we conduct fit testing we provide basic training, this includes:
- Why respirators are being worn and when they are required.
- How the respirator actually works to lower your exposure to a contaminant.
- The limitations of the respirator being tested.
- How to assemble the respirator.
- How to don or put on the respirator, and how to doff or take off the respirator.
- How to complete a “Fit Check”.
- How and when to change the filters.
- What your current filters will protect you against.
- How to clean, maintain and store the respirator.
What do I receive upon successful completion?
You will receive a certificate of the Fit Test results along with an Evidence Card. The card can be conveniently kept, readily available to demonstrate to regulators and clients your compliance with training.
